Despite falling behind 9-0 to start the game, seventh seed Hiawatha used stiffling zone defenses to keep it close and took a lead after halftime. The Redhawks were led by Denzel Chilcoat who posted 6 points but added more than 10 rebounds and steals plus a few blocks to help snap an eight-game losing streak. Kooper Winterscheidt missed most of the game with a shin injury but came back in the fourth quarter to hit 5-6 free throws and seal a 35-29 upset win.
Marysville jumped to a 19-6 early lead and never let up in a 59-49 victory as the sixth seed. Cale Green scored 14 of his 16 in the first half while the Bulldogs dominated the paint in the second half when Garrison Wright scored all 15 of his points to keep Jackson Heights at arms length. Cody Duryea had 14 for the 5-7 Cobras in the loss and while Jackson Heights was 2-8 from the line, Marysville hit 10 of 15 including 7-7 in the fourth quarter to secure their third win of the year.
Josh Merz scored 16 of his game high 20 points in the first half as Horton took control and led St. Mary‘s by six points at the break. However, too many costly turnovers left the door open and the Bears outscored Horton 31-21 in the second half to win as the fifth seed 50-46. Tyler Albright scored 16 points including a trio of treys in the fourth quarter to give St. Mary‘s their third victory of the year. Horton was 0-2 from the free throw line for the game and committed 20 turnovers, 7 in the final quarter.
In the only lopsided quarterfinal, Nemaha Valley was the only higher seed to advance as the Raiders jumped to a 17-0 advantage and cruised past Troy 56-34. Alex Hermesch had 15 points while Creighton Brinker scored 14 and Trent Olberding chipped in 13. It was the inside game and offensive rebounding which helped NV improve to 9-1 on the season. Troy had 20 turnovers dropping to 1-9.
