On Tuesday, August 7th, neighborhoods throughout Hiawatha are being invited to join forces with thousands of communities nationwide for the "29th Annual National Night Out: crime and drug prevention event. National Night Out will involve over 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world.

National Night Out is designed to: (1) heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime efforts; (3) strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-communtiy partnerships; and (4) send a message to criminals letting them know neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

For the 18th year, the Hiawatha Police Department will sponsor the National Night Out. Agencies will set up displays in the Schunernan Addition at the Fisher Center on East Iowa Street from 6:00-8:00pm. These include the Brown County Sheriff's Department, Squad 48, Town and Country Ambulance, Union Pacific Railroad and Hiawatha Fire Department. Hiawatha Thirftway will provide the hot dogs, Seneca Wholesale will provide the soda, Caseys will provide ice and Wal-Mart and Citizens State Bank will provide the paper goods, buns, chips and condiments. From 8:00-10:00pm a movie pool party will be held at the Hiawatha Aquatic Park at no charge.

The National Night Out program is an outstanding campaign to help neighborhood unity and strengthen police-community partnerships. On August 7th, everyone is invited to join forces to give crime and drugs a going away party and to meet our new Chief of Police, John Defore. For more information, contact the Hiawatha Police Department at 742-

KNZA's, Justin Fluke interviews Joey and Rory at July Jubilee in Holton.
Despite the hot temperature's July Jubilee in Holton was a great success as it featured the music of Tyler Alhgren band, Randel Stueve band and Joey and Rory who headlined the show.

Events got underway with boating, swimming and disc golf at the Banner Creek Reservoir as the crowd awaited the musical performances, which started up later in the evening. The Tyler Ahlgren and Randel Stueve bands got things underway with the music before the internationally known headliner's Joey and Rory hit the stage.  Rory grew up in Atchison and Highland and he said the concert was sort of like a homecoming for him.

People also had the opportunity to visit the new and expanding Banner Creek Science Center. After all the festivities came to a close around 10pm a huge fireworks display was showcased.
